Ledon
Concept
This project, commissioned by Ledon while at the Designskolen Kolding, a Denmark-based playground design company, aimed to cultivate children's appreciation and understanding of nature through play. Inspired by Gwen Gordon's philosophy that 'Play is intrinsically motivated and occurs in a space distinct from reality’.
Thus, the concept revolves around a playful, modular playground. The design intentionally integrates ambiguous activities, introducing an element of risk and reward, challenge and freedom, as well as a balance between chaos and order. The result is an immersive and dynamic play environment that encourages exploration and creativity, aligning with the philosophy that play is a unique, intrinsically motivated experience.

Phase 1
Fieldwork and Ideation
Fieldwork kicked off the project that involved immersive visits to a Kolding daycare center, where a co-creation workshop was organized with children aged 5 and above. The insights gathered during this interactive session informed the ideation process. Subsequent to the workshop, a series of ideation sketches were generated, capturing key concepts that later evolved into a cohesive design modeled in Rhino.

Phase 2
Concept Development
During this phase, ideas were finalized by specifying design elements and forms. Inspiration was drawn from M.C. Escher and other playgrounds, capturing key influences on a mood board. The interplay of Escher's optical illusions and dynamic playground designs guided the development of a concept that seamlessly integrates ambiguity, risk, challenge, and creative freedom. Iterative refinement led to a cohesive and engaging design.

Phase 3
CAD Modeling
The modular playground concept, designed to accommodate diverse spaces, underwent detailed CAD modeling. Each section offers a unique play area, allowing for versatile configurations. The design's adaptability enables seamless mixing and matching of sections. Prototyping refined the practical aspects. This iterative process resulted in a robust and innovative solution providing a dynamic and engaging play experience for children.
